“Awe”

“O Lord, our God
the majesty and glory of Your name
fills all the earth
and overflows the heavens”.
Psalm 8:1
Doesn’t that thought just fill you with awe? Our God, Jehovah (the All Existing One) is so wonderful; that by His own name, character, and reputation He shines forth and fills the entire earth with His excellence and glorious might! For me to try to express my adoration to Him, makes my own words seem clumsy and so very inadequate. I wonder if David who wrote most of the Psalms also had a difficult time trying to wrap his mind around the greatness of God? I’m glad the Lord knows our hearts and can hear what we are unable to fully express.
I think of this verse so often when I leave my home and go down the hill into town. I live on a hill and have only two ways to take. I usually choose the longer more scenic way in hopes to catch a glimpse of the lake. It is as if God beckons me to drive the lake road for He wants to show Himself off by delighting me with the handiwork of His creation. Daily I am charmed by how diverse each and every day (every hour of the day) brings for me to witness.
Some may say it is always gray and gloomy here in the Northwest, but I don’t think they choose to take the time to slow down and observe the ever changing scenery. Early morning brings an almost haunting fog that mysteriously lifts from the crest of the body of water down on the lake. In the afternoon, the sun sitting high above reflects down its dancing diamond-like rays, enticing us to come away from our busyness and watch the sparkles with delight. Then as the day light lowers, it casts a quilt of many pastel colors, blanketing the sky and hovering in an almost protective cover to remind us to slow down, be still, and to prepare ourselves for the evening. And just before blackness takes over for the many midnight hours, a cool dark steel blue panorama shadow unrolls its form to conceal the sky above, and then mirrors that same slate color across the lake. And for a moment… time seems to have stood still. It is good for us to allow time to stand still so that we can commune with our Heavenly Father. We need to hear His voice.
How observant are we to the Creator’s daily masterpiece, no matter where we live? How grateful are we towards Him for being so gracious to us with His beauty? And do we acknowledge the Creator or only the creation? We must look beyond to really see the vivid details, for God is not only in the big display but also in the small details of creation. Ask the Lord to "wow" you with His paintbrush and to soothe you with the music from the Heavenly orchestra. I think He likes to "wow" us.
Oh Father, may the eyes of our soul always be turned and open with great appreciation to the Artist Who delights us in so many new ways every day. And may those same eyes of ours also see the beauty within each person we meet, knowing they have been created by You, our God. You want each of us to know how much love You have for us. People are Your "best ever" creation, for each of us bears the image of our Creator.
STILLNESS OF THE NIGHT
As evening sweeps across the sky and dense slate
air covers from overhead…
I ponder on these last bygone hours and of those
still yet to come--
For I know my soul is at rest in God’s great care.
With my mind filled and submitted
to His Word--
I lay upon my bed in the stillness of the night,
and His peace rules my heart…
Again I am reminded of the faithfulness He offers.
And so I am able to gently close my eyes in
perfect trust with His promise
of safe keeping and now sleep
in the stillness of the night.
May it be our desire that we be women who live in the present and are aware of the world around us. May we take notice of the blessings God gifts to each of us, and always long to hear His whispers. Shall we also pray with a more purposeful focus on God’s will? And as we stay connected in our relationship with Christ, we will become more thankful followers. Let us commit to doing this together! Close your eyes…Open your heart, let God’s Spirit empower you today.
